Job Opening: Deputy Managing Editor

n+1 is seeking a full­-time Deputy Managing Editor. Primary job duties include assisting the Managing Editor in the production of three issues of n+1 per year, as well as two books; overseeing nplusonemag.com; and assisting with the planning and execution of magazine events.

n+1 is seeking a full­-time Deputy Managing Editor. The primary job duties are as follows:

1. Assisting the Managing Editor in the production of three issues of n+1 per year, as well as two books. This includes helping to coordinate the editorial schedule; working with writers and editors; laying out the magazine; copyediting and proofreading; and coordinating with the designer, photo editor, and printer.

2. Overseeing nplusonemag.com. This involves assigning and editing one piece a week for the website; working with the website’s volunteer editorial board; responding to pitches and submissions; overseeing publicity for web articles; and managing the website’s back-end in coordination with our developer.

3. Assisting with the planning and execution of magazine events, panel discussions, and parties, and generally serving as a strong ambassador for n+1.

Because n+1 is a small, collectively run organization, the job will also involve ad hoc administrative tasks and all­ around pitching­-in. It will be expected that candidates will have an interest in contributing and editing pieces for the print magazine as well as the website. Candidates should have several years of magazine, book publishing, and/or newspaper experience, and have demonstrated an ability to take pieces from the pitch stage all the way to publication.

Copyediting, proofreading, and InDesign skills are required, as is an affinity for n+1 and its many projects. Familiarity with Photoshop, WordPress, and HTML strongly preferred.
